Looking for a free and creative summer activity at the beach that the whole family can enjoy? Bring out the walking shoes and the sunscreen, then gather the grandchildren, the pups, and everyone in the Xtended family to meet up at Northside Park for ArtX. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 20-21, ArtX is two days filled with art and crafts, music and movies, and 58 acres of beautiful waterfront nature.
Enjoy the pathway of artisan tents around the lagoon, featuring original paintings, photography, jewelry, pottery, creative objects, and so much more, all for sale by the artists themselves. Watch artists demonstrate their unique techniques. Meet local authors and illustrators along "Authors' Row." Take a "Sculpture Walk" featuring work by Salisbury University students and professor Bill Wolff.
Check out the pop-up photography project from The University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Led by professor Jesse Halpern, "On the Corner" explores the idea of the self-portrait in the public domain. And feel the heat from the furnace as Salisbury University professor Aric Snee demonstrates the art of glassblowing.
The Art League of Ocean City offers free children's art projects during ArtX. All ages are welcome. Transform a square of pavement into a work of art with chalk. Participate in "Youth Outdoor Painting" by signing out a painting kit and picking a spot around the lagoon to paint the beautiful scenery. Go geocaching, find boxes hidden throughout the park, and decode the secret message for a prize from the wheel. Or plant a seed to take home and watch grow. Or have your face painted by an artist.
View and even take home original artwork of local landscapes created during the Artists Paint OC painting event in the official Art League tent. Watch the artists compete for prizes during Sunday's "2-Hour Quick Paint Competition". The artists paint landscapes from 10 a.m.-noon, followed by judging to pick the winners. Then the paintings go on sale from 1-3 p.m.
Stop by the Ocean City Comic Con booth to learn about the Shore's largest pop culture event. Talk comics, gaming, cosplay, anime, and more. Grab a flier and a free comic book. And, if you show up in costume, receive a special surprise.
Take a break from the sun and fun and sit down in the cool dark to watch an original movie – for free. On Saturday and Sunday, catch "Hurricane 6" at 1 p.m., a 27-minute dance film telling the story of the famed Storm of 1933 that cut the Ocean City inlet. At 2 p.m., watch "Boat House," an 18-minute movie about floating on the sea in a suburban house. The Ocean City Film Challenge begins at 3 p.m. featuring the winners of the previous year's Film Challenges as well as the premiere of the 2022 winners, yet to be announced.
Take an additional dive into art with several activities that come with a small cost. Have fun making your own tie-dye T-shirts (while supplies last) for $10. Or take an artist-led workshop. On Saturday, create oyster shell decoupage art or do a beach scene paint-along. Make a puddle pour painting on Sunday, or kids can do yarn crafting. $25-$30. Advance registration is available at ArtLeagueofOceanCity.org/classes by date, and walk-ins are welcome, too.
We'd be Xtremely happy to see you at ArtX!
